Tax credit information

Thinking about applying for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?

Let’s make sure you’re eligible before you ask a doctor/NP.

What is the DTC?

The Disability Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit from the CRA. It helps people with severe and prolonged impairments, or their caregivers, reduce the amount of income tax they may owe.

But not everyone qualifies — even with a diagnosis or health condition.

You will qualify if:

  • Your condition has lasted or will last at least 12 months
  • You are markedly restricted in basic daily activity
  • The restriction affects you at least 90% of the time
  • Even with therapy, devices, or medication, you: cannot perform the activity at all, or take significantly longer (e.g., 3x longer) than someone your age without the impairment.

What counts as a basic daily activity?

  • Walking
  • Feeding yourself
  • Dressing yourself
  • Vision
  • Speaking
  • Hearing
  • Eliminating (e.g., bowel/bladder function)
  • Mental functions (e.g., memory, planning)

Why this matters

Medical providers must follow CRA rules — providing accurate information to allow CRA to determine eligibility. Be sure to review the eligibility criteria before meeting with your doctor or nurse practitioner.

“Eligibility is based on how your condition affects your ability to function — not just a diagnosis.”
