Dr. Richard Darby is a rural family physician who joined Hope Medical Centre in March 2021, bringing more than 30 years of primary care experience from South Africa.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Dr. Darby graduated in medicine from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein in 1993. In 1996 he and two colleagues opened a full-service private primary care practice, and he stayed active in emergency care throughout. Together they also designed, opened and ran a 30-bed subacute and rehabilitation hospital in Hillcrest.
For more than two decades he was a leader in primary care advocacy in South Africa. He served as a director on regional and national bodies representing family doctors in private practice, sat on the peer review committee and the tariff negotiation sub-committee, and in 2017 was part of the external review committee for the SEMDSA Guidelines for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes. A keen interest in healthcare information technology led him to write more than twenty articles for the South African Medical Journal, the CME Journal and the Medical Chronicle.
He moved to Canada in October 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a challenging move, but well worth it. He earned his LMCC in 2021 and his CCFP in 2022. At Hope Medical Centre he cares for patients in Hope and further up the Fraser Canyon, including the First Nations communities around Boston Bar. Since April 2023 he has also been Facility Medical Director at Fraser Hope Lodge.
Teaching is close to his heart. As a Clinical Instructor with the University of British Columbia since 2023, he teaches family medicine residents and hopes to pass on the enthusiasm for family medicine that has brought him so much joy. He joined the board of the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice in October 2021, served as Vice Chair, and has been Chair since October 2024, advocating for colleagues in rural practice. In 2024 he completed the Leadership and Management Development program at SFU's Beedie School of Business.
Dr. Darby is honoured to live, work and play on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Stó:lō and Nlaka'pamux peoples.
